The new book "MOTORENMENSCHEN - Schwerpunkte aktueller Forschung an Motoren und Turbinen" gives technically interested laymen an insight into the work of engineers researching clean engines and turbomachinery. The Research Association for Combustion Engines (FVV) is publishing the book, written by technology journalists Johannes Winterhagen and Laurin Paschek, to mark its 60th anniversary.
Is it possible to build combustion engines that use fuel even more economically and are completely free of harmful emissions? What role do gas turbines play in the energy transition? How will we fly in twenty years' time? And what are engineers already doing today to achieve this? The book MOTORENMENSCHEN, published by the Research Association for Internal Combustion Engines (FVV) to mark its 60th anniversary, aims to answer such questions. The two authors have resorted to an unusual trick: instead of presenting individual research projects, they portray the people who are working on ever more efficient engines and turbines.
In 24 portraits, the entire spectrum of engineering activity is presented in a comprehensible way: Top managers from industry and independent specialists show the variety of challenges on the way to clean engines and turbomachinery. University lecturers have their say, as does a dedicated research assistant. The authors' perspective on the people behind modern research into combustion engines is not purely factual: they also describe the personality behind the engineer, their motivation and their private interests. The portraits are accompanied by artistic photographs by the renowned photographer Rui Camilo.
The framework for MOTORENMENSCHEN is provided by two in-depth interviews that deal with current issues relating to the future of the internal combustion engine, such as individual mobility or innovative materials and fuels, as well as short popular science chapters that provide an overview of the focal points of current research into internal combustion engines and turbomachinery.
