Who has never wanted to switch on or operate a simple device/machine but then despaired at the user interface - or even failed? Historically, machines took on a new quality with the introduction of process computers. They became more flexible and more powerful. Whereas previously the operating elements were located directly at the point of operation, they are now concentrated on a central operating unit. The compactness of the display made it more difficult for the operator to understand the machine and the process. While it was still possible to understand cam controls, abstract representations are sometimes puzzling, and not just for the operator. To make matters worse, such software tends to be adapted to the machine. The operator, who must be able to control the machine safely and reliably, is often forgotten or overwhelmed. Basic human perception mechanisms and behavior are disregarded, operation becomes error-prone and frustrating - the machine becomes unusable!
This guide is intended to help all those who develop, build, use and operate machines to become aware of this problem and face up to it. It uses examples to show which aspects need to be taken into account. In addition, basic ergonomic rules are presented in order to awaken the developer's understanding of the operator, to adopt his point of view and to harmonize it with the machine. The impressions gained in this way can then be used in interdisciplinary cooperation to create a software user interface that does not become a confusing interface.
