Abstract:
Elastomer
rotary shaft seals (RWDR) are used in all areas of technology for pressureless sealing of shafts. However, they reach their limits, mainly due to
thermal or chemical loads. A sealing solution that is easy to
master is then required. Shaft seals made from PTFE compounds offer such a solution.
A major advantage of this material is its almost universal chemical
and high thermal resistance. However, existing knowledge about PTFE seals is
usually not freely accessible and is based on empirical values. For this reason, a broad, freely accessible, scientifically compiled knowledge base
on PTFE sealing elements was created in this
research project.
In the research project, the state of the art of sealing systems
with PTFE seals currently available on the market was comprehensively investigated. To this end, extensive preliminary and
follow-up investigations were carried out, as well as test bench investigations. Among other things, the leakage rate, wear and frictional torque were determined for the sealing systems
. In addition, the sealing rings
were modelled and optimized using finite element analysis (FEA).
The work created extensive knowledge about sealing systems with PTFE seals.
results include the frictional torque, wear and sealing function of the
sealing systems.
The findings of the research project help seal manufacturers and users to adapt their
sealing systems to the respective operating conditions. In particular, the wear
- and therefore the service life - of PTFE seals is strongly determined by the interaction
between the sealing ring and the mating surface. With the knowledge gained from the project, unfavorable
combinations can be avoided and the geometry of the sealing rings can be adapted. As a result,
sealing system failures can be avoided and maintenance intervals extended
.
The objective of the research project has been achieved.
