Abstract:
Rotary shaft seals are used to seal shaft sealing points. They form a complex tribological system with the fluid to be sealed and the seal mating surface. If there are active conveying structures (twist) on the seal mating surface, this can have a massive impact on the sealing system.
The measurement and evaluation options for twist, especially micro-twist, are still completely inadequate. The aim was therefore to develop an evaluation method for the quantitative evaluation of micro-twist on seal mating surfaces. With the help of specifically textured shafts, the coarse influence of directed fine microstructures on the conveying effect of the shaft was investigated. The resulting findings were incorporated into the filtering and evaluation. The evaluation approach uses a high-resolution recorded surface topography of the seal mating surface. This is processed using various filtering methods and the directional microstructures that are ultimately isolated are statistically evaluated. Characteristic values were developed that best describe the microstructures relevant to sealing technology.
The correlation of evaluation and conveying value results showed that the approach used to analyze micro-twist is effective and that an extended description of twist in sealing technology is now possible.
With an additional high workload, the 3D characteristic values according to DIN-ENISO 25178-2 were considered for the first time in terms of sealing technology, which was not originally planned in the scope of the project.
The objective of the research project has been achieved.
