Abstract:
Grease-filled non-contact shaft seals (FBFWD) are often used at shaft openings subject to heavy contamination. These are gap seals of all possible geometries that are filled with grease. Common names in the literature for this type of seal are also grease-filled protective or labyrinth seals.the grease is intended to prevent dirt from penetrating the sealing gap.an international literature search did not reveal any references to literature dealing with the scientific investigation of grease-filled gaps for sealing shaft penetrations. Only in the technical literature on the subject of rolling bearings are some design proposals for FBFWD listed in the chapters on relubrication and sealing. However, specific design proposals and information on the limits of use are not found here.
How FBFWDs function in a single arrangement and with a horizontal shaft position was investigated in the project for this final report. Suitable sealing gap geometries were sought, the sealing behavior when using different greases was tested and the application limits of such systems under different operating parameters and contamination levels were determined. A design catalog for non-contacting grease-filled shaft sealing systems in individual arrangements for horizontal shaft positions was derived from the knowledge gained. Every user is now in a position to build well-founded, suitable systems and correctly assess their operating behavior.
