Abstract:
Radial shaft seals are often used to seal shaft openings. These machine elements are very common and are used in a wide variety of units and applications. In addition to the standard application of sealing a shaft made of steel, there is an increasing demand for sealing shafts made of other materials or shafts with coated surfaces.
A large number of common innovative shaft materials, surface treatment and coating processes are considered. Test shafts of all selected variants were created and used as shaft running surfaces for radial shaft seals. The comprehensive experimental investigation of the systems is the subject of the project. The system behavior was documented and evaluated in test runs with a load spectrum that included operating conditions with high thermal loads and abrasive wear. Occurring leakage, temperatures in the sealing gap, wear on the shaft and sealing edge as well as the frictional torques of the sealing systems are the key variables of a radial shaft seal. These variables were documented for each system and evaluated in comparison to the reference system. Findings on the possible applications of radial shaft seals with the investigated variants of shaft materials and coatings can be taken directly from the report.
In addition, the investigations of the different shaft materials showed how the thermal conductivity of the shaft influences the temperature in the sealing gap.
These findings apply beyond the investigated variants and are generally applicable to radial shaft seals.
The objective of the research project has been achieved.
