Abstract:
Rotary shaft seals are used in all areas of industry to seal shaft sealing points. According to the technical standards for rotary shaft seals and the associated mating surfaces, the latter must be completely free of defects. Due to economic interest, it is important to check whether the tightness of the system can be guaranteed up to a certain degree of damage. In this research project, two types of damage were investigated: dents and scratches. In a large number of tests, different types of dents were examined for their influence on the sealing function in terms of shape, orientation and depth. The orientation and depth of scratches were varied. Parallel to these tests, a multi-sensor system was developed to detect surface damage. Once the influence on the sealing function of individual types of damage had been worked out, selected damage was tested for the amount of leakage caused. In addition, optical investigations were carried out on one damage. Initial findings were also obtained using numerical flow simulation methods. As a result, a limit range was determined up to which certain damage can be compensated by the sealing mechanism of the rotary shaft seals. The objective of the research project has been achieved.
