Abstract:
The laser as a tool is characterized by high precision, freedom from wear and low heat input and is therefore finding its way into more and more areas of industrial production. In addition to cutting and welding applications in metalworking, laser beam-based processes are used in the manufacture of precision engineering and microtechnical components for structuring, cleaning and marking, among other things. As these applications require high peak powers, pulsed CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers and excimer lasers have been used to date. Compared to conventional beam sources, diode lasers offer significantly higher efficiency, compact dimensions and maintenance-free operation with a service life of 20,000 hours. Furthermore, diode lasers are available with wavelengths between 800 and 1000 nm, so that the wavelength can be adapted to the requirements of the application. A prerequisite for the sensible use of diode lasers is the ability to operate these beam sources in pulsed mode in order to achieve power densities of several MW / cm
