FKM 1996
Issue No. 218
Project No. 178

Abstract:

In the past, the agreed delivery specifications between the customer and the processor prevented the reuse of production waste for the higher-grade engineering thermoplastics frequently used in the mechanical engineering sector and the automotive and electronics industries. The reason for this situation was the general uncertainty as to what effects the incorporation of recyclate would have on the various material and component properties. Recycling would not only make ecological sense here, but also economic sense, as the price level of the materials used and the amount of waste produced in relation to the weight of the parts is high (small precision parts). The aim of this project was to use selected components as examples to improve the acceptance of recycled materials in the field of higher-grade engineering plastics and to break down the barriers to their use in technical parts. To this end, series components made of six engineering thermoplastics (PA66, PA66-GF25, PBTP, PBTP-GF30, POM, TPE-U) were processed four times each in this project and a sprue recirculation system was also implemented directly on the injection moulding machine. Test specimens were injection molded from the regrind of the components and extensive tests were carried out on both components and test specimens. The tests have shown that the production of technical components from regrind is entirely possible provided that the material is processed properly and professionally, i.e. cleanly and without damaging the material. In some cases, the material properties after multiple processing showed even smaller deviations from the virgin material than the usual batch fluctuations. Scope of report:
