Abstract:
Failures of elastomer radial shaft seals are often caused by overheating of the contact area between the radial shaft seal (RWDR) and the shaft. High temperatures in the contact area are usually caused by increased frictional power and/or poor heat dissipation from the contact area.

As part of this project, various factors influencing heat generation and heat dissipation were investigated. The influence of sealing rings with additional elements such as protective lips and fleeces, the influence of different oils and water-based fluids, the influence of shaft coatings, the influence of shaft design and the influence of the design of the sealing environment were investigated. Tests were carried out on friction torque test benches for all of the aforementioned topics.
In addition to the test bench tests, simulations were carried out for the shaft design and the design of the sealing environment. The agreement between the simulation and the tests is good.
The most important influences on the temperature in the contact area were determined on the basis of the test and simulation results. These influences were integrated into a calculation tool for the contact temperature. This made it possible to develop a practical calculation tool for the contact temperature that takes into account the most common operating conditions of radial shaft seals.

The calculation tool was supplemented by a database with all the lubricants examined in the project. In addition, user and warning instructions were added to the calculation tool in order to be able to take the design of the sealing environment into account in the calculation tool.
A catalog of optimization measures was also created. This creates tools to prevent radial shaft seals from overheating.
The aim of the research project has been achieved.
