Preamble:
Many organizations face the challenge of improving their operational efficiency and cost structures. In recent years, the proportion of IT spend in most organizations has grown disproportionately to overall revenue growth. While 10 years ago, IT expenditure as a percentage of total sales was still around 2%, the rate rose to over 3.5% in 2001 (source: Metagroup). Analysts expect this ratio to remain high in the coming years. Given the meagre margins that German companies have been raking in since the end of the boom three years ago, this is a painful process that calls for cost-cutting programs. There are various strategic approaches here. A key feature of most of these concepts is the outsourcing of processes and projects to external providers. IT outsourcing, an initiative with the aim of gradually dissolving existing investments and transforming fixed costs into variable costs, has achieved the highest level of recognition. Some of these outsourcing activities are now being directed to countries on other continents, in particular India. This case is referred to as offshore outsourcing and forms a subset of outsourcing activities. IT managers also see other opportunities in saving directly on the purchase of software solutions and in operation, which is where concepts such as open source come in. And the effect desired by the management boards is also not lacking: IT managers, CIOs and specialist managers are vehemently tackling the issue of cost reduction and process improvement. This guide provides an overview of the currently hotly debated nearshore/offshore development outsourcing route and shows which points need to be considered when asking the question "Can our company outsource IT or software development?" and provides tips for selecting a potential nearshore/offshore partner.
